hi everyone my name is Ashley Coombs I am the Middle School AIG specialist for Davidson County school I serve all seven traditional middle schools as well as the middle school grades for the Davidson County online I wanted to share some information with you I we normally have this presentation as a parent night where parents can come to the individual schools and hear about the middle school program but of course with our is this year we thought that was virtually would be the best way to get the information to you give me a little bit of background about myself I am a product of Davidson County school I graduated from North Davidson High School in 1990 I am also a product of the energy program is Davidson County schools and some of my greatest memories from elementary middle and high school are because of the AIG program graduate with a bachelor's degree in Communications from you Chapel Hill and work in the corporate world for six years before feeling a calling to teach and then I begin teaching Middle School at Ledford Middle and then also tell at Oak Grove Middle School when it opened in 2012 classroom I taught 7th and 8th grade math language arts and social studies and then I became an instructional technology master's degree from East Carolina University and this is now my 6 year as an adrenal specialist and I have to say I absolutely love working with our Advanced Learners across the county is going straight levels across different subject areas I truly enjoy to come to and everyday the purpose of our AIG plan is to make sure we are providing a differentiated education for our Advanced Learners and this was mandated when Article 90 was passed in 1996 and it make sure that we are providing instruction beyond the regular education program that is sent out by the state are six program standards that we including student identification comprehensive programming within a turtle School Community a differentiated curriculum personal and professional development partnership and programmed accountability Anne Middle School we have our primary ways of serving our AIG students we start with cluster grouping and for those of you especially our sixth grade parent this is very different than the elementary an elementary school students received their AIG Services by an energy specialist pulling them out of their regular classroom and a small group and you ain't there a IG work and that separate setting in the middle school class time it is a little bit different most of our identified students are part of a cluster group on that cluster group is made up of identified AIG students as well as other high-achieving students and advanced learners answer the entire class receives an accelerated curriculum or compacted curriculum where they are learning standards above their normal grade level in math it is going to be listed as compacted math in 6th or 7th grade for math 1 in 8th grade math one is actually a high school credit course where they get the credit for math 1 and which is typically a freshman Math course that will allow them to take more advanced math courses once they get to high school other ways that we provide services to our middle school students at we do have a IG curriculum guide for both English Language Art and compact is mass at these are guys that are teachers can follow to make sure that they are Teaching Standards above-grade-level so sixth grade in compacted math they are learning 7th grade math standards in 7th grade compacted math they are learning the eighth grade math standards so that when the students move on to math 1 and 8th grade they are not missing much as far as the eighth grade math standards and then our math teachers can fill in those other standards that they would not otherwise not received my shipping that 8th grade math course we also have a ID training for our teachers on one of the great things about our current i g plan is that we are requiring that all of our teachers who teach a cluster class in language arts or math has some type of AIG training training can include taking for graduate-level courses to get AIG certification on a teaching license they can pass the Praxis exam which also gets them the AIG licensure and if they are not in a position to either of those yet we do have a locally-developed for where the teachers will take classes and learn how to better differentiate and teach an advanced curriculum Sierra Middle School students we have many academic competitions that we support some of the ones that I promote or National History Day and mathcounts I work directly with students in those competition are media coordinator support Battle of the books we have robotics teams hopefully many of these academic competitions will be able to continue and our current circumstances that we are trying to support those as we can in these unusual but we know that many of our Advanced Learners is you have that Competitive Edge to them and want to make sure that we are providing these opportunities for them the energy specialist support is my role I work with teachers to help provide them resources and lesson plans for their Advanced student but I also try to work with students whenever possible and this year because of so much remote learning I am actually creating Google classroom for each level I also have Google classrooms for the academic competitions and I'm also hoping in the near future to provide a Google Classroom pacifically for math 1 support to provide an extra resource for students they prepare for their end-of-course exam in that one are school counselors are wonderful resources for advanced Learners we know with gifted characteristics come social and emotional needs that are not the norm for all of our other students and our counselors are well equipped to handle those and to work with those students to support them whenever possible credit demonstrated Mastery is a program that's offered to RC 8th graders and I'll talk briefly about that in just a few minutes and then finally r a g summer enrichment camp we unfortunately next summer I'll get the station for more information able to do that but the energy summer enrichment Camp is offered to a rising 6th through 8th graders and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to gain enrichment opportunities for four days over the summer and you're eager to come back each year and many of our older students get disappointed when they age out and can no longer attend so we do hope to have that opportunity back for students and when we are able to do some Hands-On activities other things that we have for our students include all the boss and Rubik's cubes and a breakout kiss these are resources that we used to promote critical thinking and depth of understanding for a student and so we hope to be able to use these again soon when we have our students in person and can safely do so credit by demonstrated Mastery is a process where Advanced Learners can attempt to place High School course and get credit for that course without taking it it is a very detailed complex process and it starts with the students taking the end-of-course exam for that course so for example if an 8th grader were interested in placing out of English 1 as a freshman in 8th grade they would take that English 1 final exam if they score a level high a level 5 or the highest level equivalent of that exam they will then be invited to participate in Phase 2 for Phase 1 test for foundational knowledge of the core Standard Bank to is an opportunity for the suit to show the depth of understanding in that subject matter so for English one they would read a book and have to do an in-depth research project on that book and do a presentation to high school teachers in that subject area score on the rubric and if they score a certain level on that rubric they are then awarded high school credit for that course it's basically a past credit it does not factor into their GPA and then they are allowed can move it to the next level of that course to pass English 1 as an eighth grader will then take English 2 honors as a 9th grader this will open up some slots for advanced level courses or additional electives while they are in high school it is a very difficult process a small percentage of our students do accomplish this each year but we do have several students who pass each year and earn that credit for 7th graders the only course offered is math 1 but for 8 they can take English 1 world history Earth environmental science math 2A or even some of the CTE elective courses have some off become available usually in late November so if we've listened to your principles message each week to see when those applications are available we are hoping to have an online option for application this year and those are due by mid-December so that we can prepare the scheduling of the exam Phase 1 start in the February and then phase II happens in March and April we do try to have the credit by demonstrated Mastery process completed so that they can focus on their end-of-grade testing at that point without having to do this at the same time if you are watching this most likely your student has been identified as a IG they have met one of these Pathways at be intellectually gifted halfway for day of school word at least 98% tile on an aptitude test the academically intellectually gifted pathway requires a 96% tile on both an aptitude antonym FEMA test and an academically gifted pathway where they have to achieve an 85th percentile on an aptitude test and then a 93rd percentile on an achievement test with grades above 93 a high score on a student motivation observation teacher recommendation checklist and then another option is a student work sample or a performance task for students have to show end understanding of the subject material and achieve a high score on a rubric h e r r a d students receive a differentiated education plan which is our commitment to providing a different pull up service for these students and this year it will be a little bit different we normally hand out a paper copy to our students each year ask them to take it home and get it signed and then it's returned in order to eliminate a lot of that back and forth this we are doing our DPS online they were posted in the Google classrooms afford to students this week they're in their AIG classroom so if they have not yet joined that please ask them to do so they burst to email so far with that codes join and in that we're asking students to take a learning style preferences inventory as well as an interest inventory and these instruction and links are in their Google Classroom they're very short take about 10 to 15 minutes each maximum and when they get the results from those were asking them to fill in their DNA to areas with their learning stop Isis and the highest interest inventory and the other different thing that we're asking them to do this year is a flexible task for they can do an investigative products on have their interest we just want them to be able to research and learn more about something that they're interested in because we all know that when students are interested in a topic they are more likely to become engaged and do their best on it and what to give them opportunity to dig a little deeper into something and learn some research skills and some presentation skills but being able to do so on something they're interested in one option for doing this is the National History Day competition many of our teachers classroom assignment will fall into this category for students can choose topics or format the presentation so if a teacher has already assigned something like this that makes it we can include it here if not we will be working on a flexible task at some point this year and so on their deep they will enter that information here unfortunately we have no Baseline. for the fiercest testing was cancelled last year due to the school closures and remote learning due to covid-19 on so we will pick that back up as soon as we get that Baseline data again this is just for us to monitor their hornets and their growth over the years and it will show us any red flags that we may need to investigate further I told you on the flexible task that were asking is to improve our students critical thinking skills they just want them to a little deeper and think a little more at the bottom of the first page of the dep there will be several options many of these will be checked these are what are offered to our students we offer cluster grouping Advanced courses interspace in Richmond academic competitions this is our commitment to providing the options for those different service levels pictures of the ep 1 area of focus if there are any particular social and emotional needs that you would like us to address will be aware of those can be noted here and that way we can make a counselors aware of that so that is all the information I have to share at this time I visit the contact information for the AIC Department miss Sally Sturtevant is are instructional student support coordinator over the K-12 AIG Raymond Davidson County schools and then again I am actually twins on the Middle School AIG specialist email is the best way to reach us as we are off and going between different schools to support our students that are teachers so if you have any questions at all please feel free to email us and we look forward to working with you and your students and their teachers this year thank you and I hope you all have a wonderful week
